My story

Hi! I’m Portia, and I’m a daughter and caregiver of my father and brother. My mom passed away in 2013 leaving her husband, son, and daughter (me) to continue on with our lives. A feat made more difficult by geography.

Shortly after my mother’s death my father suffered a mild heart attack. I left my job temporarily in Los Angeles to take care of my dad in North Carolina for the next three months. Once I knew that my father’s health was much better I went back to Los Angeles. From there I monitored his health and took over the responsibilities of paying the household bills from my home in Los Angeles. Thank God for 3-way calls or I never would have been able to manage. Things were going alright for the next two years with us handling business that way, until one day, I decided that it was time for me to go home. Without a moment’s hesitation I packed everything in a 26 foot U-Haul and said goodbye to thirteen wonderful years of living in California.

Now, my sole job and responsibility is caregiver of my father and brother. I have to admit, at first it was a challenge getting used to a new lifestyle of living with two men versus living on my own. But, I love taking care of my family! However, early on, the one thing I had to remind myself was that I need a life also, and I realized that I needed to take care of me too! Since I love to travel, I thought what better way to recharge ME than to plan an occasional getaway of my own.

That’s why I have created She’s A Traveler. All of us need to discover ways to recharge from the routine of meeting life’s challenges and responsibilities. She’s A Traveler was created as a safe haven for women to tell their stories of life and travel irrespective of age, race, religion, sexuality, or financial status.

So whether it is to inspire or to be inspired I am glad you are here.

community

means there is no "i" in team. It's a lonely road going through life alone, but when you share the bliss and challenges of life with your community of family, friends, and other loved ones, that journey becomes priceless.

responsibility

is a privilege.

PASSION

How we feel about ourselves, children, friends, and family, is how we live our lives, full of passion, zest, curiosity, intrigue, adventure, honesty, and love.
